President Malloy's response to negative media on Cadillac Tax negotiations
1/18/2010

In response to the comments on the Big Labor Health Tax Loophole."    by President Edward Malloy

On behalf of the hard working men and women of the New York State Building and Construction Trades Unions, let us educate the ill-informed media and some of our elected officials that our health plans are self funded.  The rank and file members of the New York State Building and Construction Trades have always paid their dues and always will.  We are the middle class of America.  Our affiliates have voted over the years to divert money from their wages into health insurance thereby assuring their families they would have adequate coverage.  There are no subsidies from government . . . as a matter of fact for the record, our plans have a four (4) percent surcharge to help underwrite the cost of the uninsured.  That four (4) percent helps underwrite the cost for emergency rooms that treat non-union workers injured on construction sites.

Now if every corporation, organization . . . for profit and not-for-profit . . . had a four (4) percent surcharge, maybe we would not be having this debacle on health care that is tearing our country apart.
